How to save money on fuel

Having a car is probably the most common way that people spend money. In fact, the average person spends around $1,200 per year on car expenses. A car is an expensive purchase and operating costs add up quickly as well. That’s why we’re going to take a look at some ways that you can save money on fuel without even thinking about it.

Fuel prices in 2022 are skyrocketing, so it's important to look at ways to save money on fuel.  There are ways to improve the fuel economy of your car.

Improving your driving style can save fuel

If you drive with bad habits, you could be wasting fuel. The first thing to do if you think this may be true for you is to make sure that you are aware of your habits. You should also try to change them so that they will help you to conserve fuel. For example, you might notice that you tend to speed up when you see other cars ahead of you. This means that you are using more gas than necessary. Instead of speeding up, just to slow down later when you reach other cars, pace your speed so that you reduce unnecessary speed increases and braking.

In general, drive more slowly and try to avoid stopping and starting as much s possible.  This means being aware of upcoming red lights and avoid accelerating up to them.  Slow down as you approach red-lights, so that you can have a rolling start as they turn green.  This avoids burning extra fuel on more abrupt accelerations.

Another habit that you should avoid is tailgating. Tailgating wastes fuel because you will often need to brake more abruptly, then accelerate again when the car in front speeds up.

Car maintenance and tires

The most obvious way to save money on fuel is to keep your car in great condition. This includes regular maintenance and tire replacement. Not only are these important steps towards keeping your car in the best shape possible, they can also help you save a lot of money.

A way to improve fuel efficiency without any cost, is to keep your tires at the correct pressure for your car.  Your car will use less fuel when the tire pressures are optimal.

Travel together and share rides

One way to save money on fuel is to travel together and share rides.  One way that people can use this strategy is by carpooling their coworkers.  It’s much cheaper to have two people travelling in one vehicle rather than driving two cars, which really adds up each week.

Another option is to ride with friends. Sharing rides can be very convenient, but it does require planning ahead. Make sure to coordinate schedules before you leave home.

Another option for saving money on fuel is to walk where possible.

Remove excess weight in the car

Carrying unnecessary items will increase the weight of your car, and increase the fuel used.  Within reason, reduce the items that you carry in your car

Reduce the use of your air conditioner

Air conditioning uses energy, and therefore, it uses fuel. To save money on fuel, turn off your air conditioner and heater whenever you aren’t using it and when the temperature is comfortable.  You may decide to use the air conditioner to obtain a comfortable temperature, then turn it off, depending on your climate and how hot the temperature is outside.

Use a fuel additive

Fuel additives are available that can increase your vehicle's fuel efficiency.  Some can even allow you to use a lower octane fuel, but still outperform the results of using a higher octane fuel.
