Fuel Additives And How They Can Help Your Vehicle

Why are we talking about fuel additives?

Oil and its derivatives (gasoline and diesel) tend to behave in an unstable manner inside the combustion chamber. This molecular instability causes solid residues called oxides to form during the combustion process. This acid process results not only in the formation of carbon but also in the oxidation of the metal parts of the engine, which causes them to adhere to each other, resulting in buildup and eventual damage.

This process will cause your engine to use more fuel, pollute your surroundings, increase preventive and corrective maintenance costs, decrease your car's performance, and reduce its lifespan.

The oil industry has been working on ways to prevent this problem for years. The most common solution is to add additives that are designed to reduce and reverse oxidation, buildup and damage.

The use of oil additives has been known for many years. In fact, it was discovered as early as 1884 when Karl Benz invented his first internal combustion engine. He found that adding a small amount of alcohol to gasoline improved the performance of his engine. Since then, there have been numerous patents issued for different types of oil additives.

What Are Fuel Additives?

Additives are chemicals added to gasoline to improve its performance. They're used to reduce engine wear and emissions, and to prevent corrosion. Additives include detergents, dispersants, anti-knock agents, antioxidants, and friction reducers.

There are many types of additive products, each claiming to improve certain areas of your vehicle. Some additives are designed to help you clean your car while others claim to make your engine run smoother, increase performance and reduce emissions. Depending on the additive, some users say they increase your gas mileage.

What are the different types of Fuel Additives

Different types of fuel additives are needed depending on what type of problem you're trying to address.

Types of fuel additives available, include detergents, dispersants, anti-knock agents, antioxidants, rust inhibitors, and friction modifiers. Each type of additive works differently, depending on the type of vehicle.

When selecting a fuel additive, consider the following factors:

• Detergent - Detergents are usually made from petroleum products such as kerosene, diesel, and jet fuels. These work well when fuelling engines that use carburettors. The detergent helps keep carbon deposits out of the air intake system.

• Dispersant - Dispersants are typically made from polymers, alcohols, and vegetable oils. These help break down oil sludge and remove water droplets from the crankcase. This reduces wear and tear on pistons and rings.

• Anti-Knock Agent - Anti-knock agents are usually made from ethers, esters, amides, and ketones.  These reduce knocking, which occurs when too much oxygen is introduced into the cylinder during ignition. Knocking causes excessive heat and pressure inside the cylinder, causing damage to the piston and ring seals.

• Antioxidants - These are usually made from phenols, quinones, nitroso compounds, and sulfur-containing compounds. These protect against oxidation, which occurs when fuels become unstable due to exposure to sunlight, extreme temperatures, or prolonged storage times. Oxidation creates harmful compounds called free radicals, which cause engine wear and premature failure.

• Rust Inhibitors - These prevent metal surfaces from corroding, which leads to rusting and pitting. Corrosion weakens metals over time, making them susceptible to cracking and breaking.

• Friction Modifiers - These fuel additives are used to enhance fuel flow. They are usually made of fatty acids, waxes, and paraffins.  These reduce friction between moving parts, allowing engines to run at higher speeds. Friction increases as speed increases, which means engines need to be slowed down to avoid overheating.

What are the benefits of fuel additives?

Fuel additives are used to improve the performance of gasoline.   With today's rising prices, many people are using additives to improve gas mileage.  They are designed to enhance combustion efficiency, clean the engine and prevent engine knock.  For many people, the main overall benefit is improvement in fuel economy.

Here are three benefits of using fuel additives:

#1. Improves Fuel Efficiency

Improving fuel efficiency means that you can save money on gas. This is especially true if you drive an older car. Older cars tend to burn more fuel than newer models.  Some fuel additives act as fuel stabilizers which prevents the formation of gums and varnishes. Gums and varnish clog up your fuel injector nozzles and restrict fuel flow. This results in less efficient burning of fuel. By adding a fuel additive, you will have cleaner running engines and better fuel economy.

Adding fuel additives to your gas tank can help you save money on gas. If you add too much additive, however, you may find that your engine doesn't run properly.

#2. Reduces Engine Knock

Engine knock occurs when the air/fuel mixture becomes too rich. As a result, the spark plug fires prematurely.

When this happens, the engine burns inefficiently, causing excessive heat buildup and resulting in damage to the engine.

Additives can help prevent engine knock. For example, adding a small amount of detergent to the gas tank can help prevent knocking.

#3. Prevents Carbon Deposits

Carbon deposits build up in the cylinders over time. These deposits cause problems such as poor ignition timing and increased exhaust emissions.

Dispersants can help prevent these deposits. Adding a small amount of dispersant to the gas tank helps prevent carbon deposits.

#4. Fuel system cleaner

A fuel system cleaner will remove contaminants from the fuel filter and carburettor. It also cleans the intake manifold and fuel injectors.

The cleaner will keep the engine running smoothly and efficiently.

#5. Improve engine performance

Some additives can improve engine performance by increasing power output and reducing emissions and promoting complete combustion.

For instance, some additives can increase octane ratings. Octane rating refers to how powerful the fuel is. The higher the number, the more powerful the fuel.  Other additives can reduce emissions. Some additives can reduce the amount of hydrocarbons emitted by the engine.

#6. Lengthen engine life

In addition to improving fuel efficiency and performance, fuel additives can extend the life of your vehicle's engine.

This is because they protect against corrosion. Corrosion weakens metals over time, making them susceptible to cracking and breaking.

The Bottom Line On Fuel Additives

Fuel additives have been around since the beginning of motorized vehicles. They were originally used to prevent engine damage from carbon buildup, but today they also provide additional protection against corrosion, wear, and tear. Fuel additives are available in many forms, including liquid, gel, and solid. Some are designed specifically for use in diesel engines, while others work well in gasoline engines too. Regardless of which type you choose, they will add value to your vehicle and improve its performance.

Fuel additives are easy to use.  Simply add the product in your fuel tank when you fill your tank.

Keep in mind that not all fuel additives will work for your vehicle.  If your goal is to improve mileage, monitor your fuel efficiency (miles per gallon or litres per 100km) to determine if your chosen product is working for you.
